Constipation

Constipation is not fun. It is a difficult functional bowel disorder. The symptoms include reduced stool frequency, stool that is very hard, trouble passing stool, feeling as though the evacuation was incomplete and pain or cramping in the abdomen. It is very uncomfortable. Unfortunately, it is also quite common. About 14-16% of adults worldwide are affected by it.  Many people who chronically suffer feel it seriously affected their quality of life. It is estimated that in the U.S. alone constipation accounts for 92,000 hospitalizations annually and is the most common digestive complaint. Constipation can be caused by many factors. Some of them include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pregnancy, poor diet stress, inactive lifestyle and medications. Probiotics can help to treat constipation.

One study found that almost half of the patients suffering with chronic constipation are not happy with the conventional treatments offered. These include laxatives and fibre supplements. Multi strain probiotics have been shown to offer relief.

An imbalance in your gut can lead to constipation. Probiotics can help to minimize or prevent constipation by increasing short-chain fatty acid production, reducing the pH of the colon and upping the bile salt metabolism. This all assists in stimulated peristalsis. Also, probiotics can enable the colon to keep a healthy lining of mucus to clear the way for the process of defecation.

Some research has proven that on average probiotics increased gut transit time by 12.4 hours, upped weekly bowel movements and caused the stools softer thus easier to pass. Even infrequent constipation can disrupt the balance of your digestive system. Fecal matter contains waste products including many species of pathogenic microorganisms. When it stays in your colon longer than necessary it can start to affect the balance of your gut microbiota. Probiotics can help to populate your gut with good bacteria.

Probiotics also are beneficial in managing IBS and can help to alleviate symptoms associated like constipation, diarrhea, pain in the abdomen and bloating.

When you gut microbiome has adequate healthy microbes it works at the right pace to allow nutrients from the food you eat to be properly digested and to then expel the things it does not need in the form of a bowel movement on a regular predictable schedule. This allows you to feel comfortable and avoid the unpleasant effects associated with constipation. Probiotics play a vital role in ensuring this balance in your gut.
